
Your logo may look perfectly sharp on your phone or computer and still be unusable when it reaches a printer.
Printing and production companies repeatedly warn about the same artwork problems: blurry images, files that are not truly vector, missing fonts, unexpected color changes, and details that are too small to reproduce.
These problems can delay an order, create additional artwork charges, affect the finished result, or force the artwork to be rebuilt. Before sending your logo to a printer, sign shop, engraver, vinyl company, or promotional-products provider, check for these 10 costly mistakes.
1. Using a Low-Resolution Logo
One of the most common problems printers encounter is artwork that does not contain enough detail for the requested production size.
A logo downloaded from a website, copied from social media, or captured in a screenshot might look fine when displayed small. When enlarged for a sign, banner, shirt, or boat graphic, it may become blurry or pixelated.
Increasing the resolution after the fact does not restore the missing detail. The logo may need to be manually rebuilt as vector artwork.
2. Assuming the File Is Vector Because of Its Extension
A file ending in PDF, SVG, or EPS is not automatically true vector artwork.
A low-resolution JPG or PNG can be placed inside one of these file formats without becoming vector. The image will still become blurry when enlarged, and it may not work with cutting, engraving, or specialty-production equipment.
True vector artwork is constructed from editable paths and shapes. It can be resized without losing sharpness.
3. Sending Missing or Editable Fonts
If a logo contains live, editable text, its appearance may change when the printer opens it without the original font installed.
The printer may see a substitute font, altered spacing, or missing text. That can delay production while everyone searches for the correct font file.
Converting lettering to curves or outlines preserves its exact appearance and removes the need for the printer to have the font.
An editable master file should always be retained before converting the text.
4. Using the Wrong Color Setup
Colors displayed on a phone or monitor can look different when printed.
Screens generally display color using RGB light, while many commercial printing processes use CMYK inks. Some specialty-production methods require designated spot colors or a one-color file.
An incorrect color setup can result in duller colors, unexpected shifts, or confusion about which color should be produced.
Before preparing the final artwork, ask the printer whether the job requires RGB, CMYK, Pantone, spot-color, or one-color files.
5. Preparing the Artwork at the Wrong Size
Artwork should be checked at the size at which it will actually be produced.
A small image might appear sharp until it is enlarged. Thin lines and tiny lettering that look acceptable on a large computer screen may disappear or fill in when produced at a smaller size.
Confirm the final dimensions with the printer before approving the artwork. Resolution, line thickness, spacing, and detail should all be evaluated at the intended size.
6. Including Lines or Details That Are Too Small
Every production method has limits.
Extremely thin lines, tiny gaps, small lettering, and intricate details may break, close up, disappear, or become impossible to weed and cut. What works for digital printing might not work for vinyl, embroidery, engraving, foil, embossing, or screen printing.
There is no single minimum measurement that works for every printer and process. The artwork must be checked against the requirements of the company producing it.
7. Relying on Gradients, Shadows, or Transparency
Gradients, glows, shadows, transparency, and realistic effects can work in some full-color printing processes. They may not work in production methods that require solid shapes or separated colors.
Vinyl cutting, engraving, foil stamping, embossing, and certain screen-printing applications often need simplified artwork.
A logo should include a clean one-color version that remains recognizable without relying on special effects.
8. Leaving Open, Overlapping, or Unnecessary Paths
Messy vector construction may not be noticeable on a screen, but it can cause problems when the artwork is sent to production equipment.
Open paths, duplicate shapes, stray points, accidental overlaps, and unjoined elements can create incorrect cuts, gaps, extra lines, or production errors.
These problems are especially important for vinyl cutting, engraving, routing, foil dies, embossing dies, and other processes that follow the artwork’s paths.
9. Not Having a Usable One-Color Version
A full-color logo is not suitable for every application.
Some printers and manufacturers need a logo in one solid color for engraving, vinyl, foil, embossing, promotional products, stamps, or small-scale reproduction.
Simply converting a detailed logo to black does not always produce a usable result. Overlapping elements, shadows, and dark areas may merge together.
The one-color version should be intentionally prepared and checked for clarity.
10. Sending Incomplete or Poorly Organized Files
Missing linked images, unclear filenames, incorrect exports, and multiple unidentified versions can create unnecessary back-and-forth.
The printer should not have to guess which file is final, which color version to use, or what size the artwork should be.
Depending on the project, a properly organized logo package may include:
SVG, EPS, or vector PDF files
Clearly identified RGB and CMYK versions
A clean one-color version
A transparent PNG
A JPG preview
Clearly stated dimensions or production instructions
A File Can Open and Still Not Be Production-Ready
Being able to open a logo file does not mean it is properly prepared for production.
A printer may be able to accept the file but still need to repair, recreate, simplify, or convert it before the job can move forward. Catching these problems early can reduce delays, avoid repeated artwork charges, and produce a more dependable result.
