What Do the Numbers On Fruit Labels Mean? You'll Be Surprised.

Have you ever noticed the little stickers on fruits at the grocery store? Those numbers aren’t just for scanning at checkout—they tell you a lot about how your fruit was grown!

We thoughtfully select our fruit for freeze-drying, ensuring it meets high standards for quality and growing practices. Our goal is to provide you with the purest, most natural options, free from unnecessary pesticide concerns.

Here’s why they matter and how they can help you make the best choices for your fresh fruit too!

The PLU Code Breakdown

PLU stands for Price Look-Up, and these codes help stores track their produce. But they also reveal how the fruit was grown:

  • Starts with 9 (5-digit code, e.g., 94038) → Organic

    • If the code is five digits and starts with a 9, the fruit was grown organically, without synthetic pesticides or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
    • Example: Organic strawberries have the code 94038.
  • Starts with 4 (4-digit code, e.g., 4038) → Conventionally Grown

    • If the code is four digits and starts with a 4, the fruit was grown using conventional farming methods. This means pesticides and synthetic fertilizers were likely used.
    • Example: Regular strawberries have the code 4038.
  • Starts with 8 (5-digit code, e.g., 84038) → Genetically Modified (GMO)

    • If the code is five digits and starts with an 8, the fruit has been genetically modified (GMO). These are less common in fresh produce but can still be found.

Why Does This Matter for Our Freeze-Dried Strawberries?

When fruit is freeze-dried, all the water is removed, but the nutrients and flavors are locked in! That’s why it’s important to start with high-quality fruit.

Since we get our strawberries directly from trusted farms and wholesale sources, we carefully select the best fruit for freeze-drying. This ensures that our freeze-dried strawberries are full of natural flavor, with no unnecessary additives—just pure, delicious fruit!

Next time you buy fresh fruit, check the labels—it’s an easy way to know exactly what you’re getting. And when you choose our freeze-dried strawberries, you can trust that we’ve already done the hard work of picking the best for you!
